LEVEL 1 - FOUNDATIONS OF SAND TRAY PLAY THERAPY (13 CE hrs.)

Prerequisite Masters or doctoral degree in counseling or related field. Prior experience with the sand tray is helpful but not necessary

Level 1 explores the fundamental theory, skills, tools, and methods of sand tray play therapy for children and adults.  Hands-on experiences allow participants to explore the various elements of the sand tray process.  Through building and witnessing individual sand tray worlds, participants will be able to develop and practice basic skills for incorporating sand tray play therapy into their practice.  .

Goals 1.  To experience the process of sand tray play therapy.
2.  To develop the basic skills for using sand tray play therapy with both children and adults.

Objectives Workshop participants will be able to

1.       explain the importance of mindfulness and apply its use in sand tray play therapy

2.       demonstrate  attunement to their own and others’ experiences in the sand tray process

3.       discuss the history and various theoretical perspectives on sand tray play therapy

4.       identify  six foundational principles for the practice of sand tray play therapy and the neurobiological basis for each

5.       explain the equipment needed for sand tray play therapy, including options for both office and portable set-ups

6.       identify the categories of sand tray miniatures needed for effective implementation of sand tray play therapy                                                       

7.       identify the phases of a sand tray play therapy session and how to facilitate each phase with children, adolescents, and adults                                                                 

8.       apply the basic skills for effective therapeutic witnessing of sand tray play with children, adolescents, and adults                                                       

9.       describe  ways to begin incorporating sand tray play therapy into their own practice, including treatment goals, progress notes, communication with parents and treatment teams
